How to Become a Digital Marketing Expert in Nigeria: Guided Step

Step Number #1:

The first step involved in becoming a digital marketer in Nigeria is to Choose any topic of your choice which you think know you can write about, tell a story about, or a topic you think you can discuss with people (from morning to night) without passing out.

Why I’m telling you this is that I don’t want you to get tired on the way and tell me that “Khris that topic you chose for me is boring”.

That is why being a digital marketer has to do with connecting your passion with digital skills.

Almost all the top Digital Marketing Influencers in the world today once had a career in other fields before starting their journey in this industry.

This part shouldn’t take much of your time.

If you’re not sure of what to blog about, just connect me (personally) on any of my social media handles or leave a comment after this post.

Let’s rub minds together to brainstorm to come up with a very hot and viable topic.

Step Number #2:

I could have told you to make research first about your topic in this second step but there is no need for that.

Almost any topic can sell these days.

The lesser the competition the more likely you’re to dominate in that area.

So the second step involved in learning and becoming a digital marketer in Nigeria is to start blogging about the topic.

But before you can be able to set-up a blog you need to do the following:

  • Choose a domain name
  • Register your domain with a domain registrar. 12$ maximum for 1 year(5min)
  • Choose a hosting platform (1 min)
  • Host your domain. 2.99$ maximum monthly (10 min)
  • Install WordPress for free (4 min)
  • Start writing (30 min)
  • That’s all

You have just started your journey in this industry.

Opportunities available in the digital marketing industry here in Nigeria and even Ghana down to South Africa are soo unlimited!

Now, if you’re new to the online world or you can’t find your way in setting up a blog. This how it is done(in a nutshell).

Buy your Domain with Namecheap (they are the most affordable and recommended domain registrar).

A host using Bluehost (they are one of the best I can attest to).

Install WordPress from your Hosting Platform, or visit their official site to Install.

Open your WordPress dashboard and go to post start writing ahead!

In fact you can get a domain for free if you choose Bluehost.

==> Read how I create my a money-making blog here

If the whole process seems confusing, then read that above article guide on how to start a blog sharply.

Or maybe don’t even worry about reading… Let me set it up for FREE. contact (at) khrisdigital (dot) com.

Step Number #3:

The third step involved in learning and becoming a digital marketer in Nigeria is to Install Google Analytics to monitor and track your web traffic and begin to optimize your blog posts for Google SERPs.

You might be hearing these terms for the first time, no worries. I was once a beginner like you.

Now I will want you to learn a little bit about optimizing your article for Search Engine.

This is when you will start learning your first Digital marketing skill in Nigeria. SEO.

Read this Beginners article on SEO or email me personally on Contact (at) khrisdigital (dot) com to get an SEO course and E-book for free.

Then as for Google Analytics, that one is very very simple to do. Read it here or HOLLA ME to help you out with it.

I hope you’re still with me? Okay let’s ride one to the next step

Step Number #4:

Here you just have to keep on writing and publishing more articles as much as you can and make sure you go by the SEO guideline.

Then next open a Facebook Page for your blog. Even a 10-year-old can open a Facebook page, Lol. It is not hard at all.

No twitter yet. Let us focus on one social media platform first.

I would have told you to start learning AdWord, but no need to rush you.

I did that mistake when I started, by quickly enrolling in Google Academy and got about 4 certifications(online) from Google and 3 others from SEMrush and Hubspot.

I even paid for an online marketing course back the then 😔

But I want to put it to you that that certification matters less to me now and in general because I just took them out of nervousness.

Actually consumed them without being practical.

Those things don’t actually make you an experienced marketer.

Certification matters less in today’s world, let your results be your certification.

Step Number #5:

Install Useful plugins to your WordPress and Sign-up for an Email marketing platform for FREE.

As you can see, the cost of becoming a digital marketer in Nigeria is very cheap and doesn’t cost you much.

All you just need a little investment not up to #20,000 or a few dollars I think.

But as time goes ON you will really need to invest HEAVILY in courses, tools, and resources.

There are plugins you will be needing to make your new blog not look childish, a plugin like Yoast (for SEO), a Social share plugin (for visitors to share to their social platforms), and other needful plugins.

Then to the next and sorted after digital marketing skill in Nigeria; EMAIL MARKETING

This is one of the skills that most of those acclaimed and roadside digital marketers hardly possess. Let me leave this story for another day.

Just go to Mailchimp.com and signup for free, embed the email sign-up form to your blog, and start building your mailing lists.

You can go to Youtube and learn how to use Mailchimp on your own.

Step Number #6:

Keep writing more blog posts, Start sharing your blog posts on your Facebook page, promote your blog posts there, and optimize your blog for more traffic.

Here your blog is up and running, this is where you begin to apply some marketing tactics in promoting your blog to Facebook and optimize your blog posts for Search Engine traffic using Advanced SEO tactics.

You can Boost your Facebook page posts or start learning how to run an effective Facebook Ad campaign.

Get your hands on some beginners’ Facebook Ad videos on Youtube and read a few blog articles.

Final Step #7:

I don’t want us to go into the money-making aspect.

That will be for another day because it is not something I’ll be able to cover now.

And by the way, I want you to absorb enough knowledge before we go further. Don’t rush it!

Just bear it in mind your journey has started! The money will follow suit.

In the meantime keep on learning as everything begins to unfold by itself. At this point, you will begin to notice some minor (but major) transitions in your life and career.

You may feel accomplished at some point and at some point feel like giving up. I understand.

I’ve been there and know that feeling. It’s just a process we must all go through.

Just bear it in mind that I’m here to help you succeed online and become one of the best digital marketers in Nigeria.

If you’re after some ways to make money online or something… Just go through the affiliate marketing section of my blog to get some ideas.

What else do I need to know in order to become a good digital marketer in Nigeria?

There are things I will like to spill out to you before I end this post.

These are things you need to know and need to do to become a good online marketer in Nigeria.

  1. Read blogs day in day out and subscribe to the top digital marketing blogs online:

Some of the blogs you need to read (which I also read) to become a digital marketer are;

  • Hubspot.com
  • Nielpatel.com
  • SearchEngineJournal.com
  • Inbound.org
  • Backlinko.com
  • Socialmediaexaminar.com
  • SmartInsights.com

There are many more sites and blogs to explore when it comes to digital marketing.

I don’t want to overwhelm you with many…

So just begin with any of the above.

  1. Implement as you learn and leave no stone unturned:

You know the digital world is all about execution and results.

You actually need to take things to step by step if you want to truly become what you are going to be proud of in the next 6months to 2 years.

  1. Help people for free a lot

The reward behind the art of giving and being valuable can’t be overtaking for granted.

Especially when you’re trying still trying to grow or build something big.

Most times you really need to test your skill level by performing some practical digital marketing tasks.

You have to do those works for free. If they yield positive results well, if not you go back and complete your assignment.

I can still recall when I used to rank websites for free, manage some small businesses social media pages for free, consultations and blog SEO auditing.

Although I still help out people now, but as when I started.

Just locate startups, non-profits and test out your knowledge. It will build you up.

  1. Learn under a Guider/Mentor

This was the part I found difficult embracing when starting out as a digital marketer, I knew no one apart from the few friends I met on social media groups who were also beginners like myself.

It took me a while (building trust and showing up) before I started reaching out(online) to top digital marketers around the world.

I learned a lot from them, Piece by piece.

It will take you weeks or even months before you find a good and reliable mentor out there in the digital marketing sphere.

Even if you get one, you have to prove to them that you’re a trustworthy fellow and other key values you need to show.

Nobody wants to input where they aren’t gonna appreciated or being valued.

If you’re fortunate enough to read up to this aspect, then you’ve truly shown seriousness.

It will be my pleasure to guide you to your promise land. IF YOU’RE READY TO PUT IN THE WORK. But the truth is a lot of Nigerians who have contacted me aren’t serious at all.

Conclusion

A digital marketing career isn’t for everyone.

Yes, it’s not.

It is only meant for people who have seen the future of online marketing in Nigeria and the new shape it will have taken over the last ONE YEAR.

Those who start TODAY are those who will be the KEY economy drivers in a few years to come.
